2012 AUSTRALIAN SALOON CAR SERIES - Round Three Qualifying - Winton Raceway
Despite shedding a power steering hose late in qualifying for the third round of the Dial Before You Dig Australian Saloon Car Series, Simon Tabinor has posted the fastest time for race one (of three) tomorrow.
Like most of the 22-car field the English-born Victorian, aboard his Eurostar Diesels Holden Commodore VT, posted his fastest time in the first of the two qualifying sessions, and pipped series leader Matt Lovell from South Australia, by 0.4 seconds to claim his first pole of the year.
Lovell’s Batteries Direct Ford Falcon AU did have and answer to the pace of the front runner. “But yesterday we were well ahead of everyone in the wet, given that Simon was not here,” Lovell said. “With it looking like rain tomorrow, that makes us look pretty good.”
Two cars that were quicker in the later outing were the Commodores of Victorian Gavin Ross and South Australian Josh Kean who consolidated their third and fourth starting places. Next will be Matt Palmer whose Commodore ended the second session on its roof at turn twelve having glanced off the wall. His crew was confident that repairs to the hood and new windscreen would be all that was required.
Falcons filled the next two spots in the shape of Luke Westall and Sam Milton while third in the series, Robert Lonie (Commodore) will start out of eighth ahead of the Holdens of Travis Lindoff and Harley Phelan.
Notable absentee was Andy Nowland who’s Falcon was damaged in transit while first honours in the battle of the girls went with Kelli Stephens out-pointing Rebecca Drummond who had her first steer in an AU, curtsey of Mark Primmer.
Tomorrow Sunday is race day with three nine-lap races schedule for 9.30am, 11:45am and 1.35pm. Each race can be seen and heard live on www.itvlive.com.au, on July 1 on SBS’ Speedweek, and later on Speed at a time to be advised.
